Fight the #CORONAVIRUS by wearing a #MASK, like in #Japan!

Don’t forget to wear a #Mask!

Wearing a Noh Mask (source: International Noh Institute)

Wearing a Noh Mask (source: International Noh Institute)

Many French people (as well as Westerners in general) do not like or are not used to wear masks!

In Asia and in Japan, in particular, this is part of everyday life, as citizens do not want to infect/contaminate their fellow citizens.

Following the CORONAVIRUS crisis worldwide, health authorities are strongly recommending to wear masks in order to avoid spreading the virus as well as getting infected oneself. Some people however refuse to comply with this, ignoring the warnings and various messages on TV, as this is part of the local culture.

If you want to know more about #JapanCross-cultural Management, you will find more information in our book: “Bridges to Japanese Business Etiquette: Understanding Japan Cross-cultural Management”.

Fight the #CORONAVIRUS by #Bowing the #Japanese way instead of shaking hands!

Forget about the traditional hand shakes!

Japanese style bowing

Japanese style bowing

French people often shake hands or even exchange kisses on the cheeks, when greeting friends, acquaintances, colleagues, partners or even clients sometimes. This is part of everyday life.

Following the CORONAVIRUS crisis worldwide, health authorities have strongly recommended to stop such practices in order to avoid spreading the virus and being infected. Some people refuse to comply with this, ignoring the warnings and various messages on TV, as this is part of the local culture.

There is however no need to stop greeting your counterparts!!!

Why not bow like Japanese people do?

PS> Guidelines (when there is no virus): To bow or not to bow? That’s the question.

Bowing in Japan is a typical way of Greeting and Showing Respect.  When Japanese bow to each other, the person of lower status bows more deeply.

If you are not Japanese, how should you behave?

Depending on whom you are meeting:

  • When meeting International interlocutors from Japan: no bowing is needed, « handshakes » are most probably OK (when there is no virus around).
  • When meeting Domestic interlocutors: only shake hands if offered by your Japanese counterpart! If no hand shaking seems possible, bow a little (the angle has a meaning). In front of VIP people (higher status), bow more deeply.

When do you need to bow with Japanese?

  • At the beginning: when exchanging cards
  • At the end: when leaving, when saying goodbye

Conference on Transformation of Global and Japanese Business in Digital Age

"Transforming Japanese Business: Rising to the Digital Challenge"

“Transforming Japanese Business: Rising to the Digital Challenge”

Follow up – Conference on Transformation of Global and Japanese Business in Digital Age, in Kyoto (Japan)!

JapaneseBusiness DigitalAge Kyoto GBMC Huysveld

Organizers: William W. Baber (Kyoto University, Japan) & Anshuman Khare (Athabasca University, Canada)

Conference Adviser: Hiroki Ishikura (Osaka Gakuin University, Japan)

 Dates: February 28-29, 2020 (completed)

Business today is facing unprecedented change especially due to the adoption of new, digital technologies, with a noticeable transformation of manufacturing and services. The changes have been brought by advanced robotics, the emergence of artificial intelligence, and digital networks that are growing in size and capability as the number of connected devices explodes.

In addition, there are advanced manufacturing and collaborative connected platforms, including machine-to-machine communications. Adoption of digital technology has caused process disruptions in both the manufacturing and services sectors and led to new business models and new products. This Conference explores how the business transformation taking place in Japan is influenced by the digital revolution and how it impacts the Japanese traditions and culture.

International scholars, policy makers and practitioners from Denmark, Finland, Greece, UK, USA and Canada joined a strong group of speakers from Japan in Kyoto end of February 2020.

This Conference was planned around the release of the edited book “Transforming Japanese Business: Rising to the Digital Challenge” published by Springer Asia in January 2020.
